Our project
2020 BMW M2 Competition
The 2020 BMW M2 Competition was purchased in 2022. It started out as a stock street car meant to be used for the occasional track days and a Sunday driver. The only additions were the mounting of a garmin catalyst for track data and Michelin Cup 2 tires.
Time trials
In 2023 the decision was made to run a more robust schedule of track days and add the occasional time trial. Basically the car remained unchanged except for the addition of camber plates during the season to reduce tire chunking and wear. We had our first major shunt at Thompson Motor Speedway out in the back loop clipping a tire barrier sending the car to the body shop and shortening our season.
upgrades
After a shortened season in 2023 and a lot of soul searching, it was decided that to be able to compete, upgrades would be needed to be competitive and unleash the true potential of the M2. Aero was added starting with a rear wing from ECS and an M2CS front lip from Bullet Proof. Lighter forged aluminum wheels helped reduce weight. And of course stickers - lots of stickers! We started experimenting with different tires and analyzed a lot of data aquired during track days. As in life, not all days in racing can go smoothly. We were plagued with DCT error codes causing a DNF at Thompson during a time trail. A small shunt at Palmer had us retiring during practice and shut down our weekend. This led to the addition of a splitter that intergrated with the front lip to add more downforce to the front end just in time for Watkins Glenn. The M2 really came into its own at Watkins Glenn posting competitive times and then again at New Hampshire Motor Speedway finishing strongly for the last time trial of the season. All told the M2 was more than 5 seconds faster over the same course at NMHS than at the start of the season. I want to give a big shout out to ACE Performance for making this possible. Their worksmanship, knowledge and attention to detail are unmatched!
This was the original setup entering the 2024 season.
This was the final race setup going into the end of the 2024 season. Due to weather conditions, we were able to run the same track configuration at NHMS road course that we ran at during the beginning of the season. The final setup was over 5 seconds faster!
what's NEXT!
No longer a street car, we have lots of parts piling up as our M2 gets ready for an extensive makeover. Keep checking back for updates!!
